Can you start the engine in gear with clutch engaged and car does not lurch forward or backwards? If so check to see if front axles are spinning. If one is, the six steel balls in the CV joint have fallen out. The clutch could be stuck in it's dis-engaged position (doubtful), the internal steel shifting linkage nub may have broken off and it's not really going into any gear. If car goes forward but won't reverse the the reverse gear is shot. Ring and pinion may be shot. BE CAREFUL! USE A HELPER WHILE CHECKING. YOU DON'T WANT THE CAR TO SUDDENLY TAKE OFF WITHOUT A DRIVER IF SOMETHING SUDDENLY POPS INTO USE.
