Every 900 I've ever seen has had the orange paint spot on that screw. I think it's a factory thing. Usually I remove that screw when changing a fuel pump, so if it's untouched, maybe it is original. Some do bend the plastic tabs back to remove the lines and don't touch the screw, this might have worked once upon a time when the tabs weren't brittle, but now this usually breaks them. Bottom line: If your orange paint spot indicates the screw is untouched, your pump is either new or a very old replacement.
In my experience, the pumps last anywhere between 150000 to 200000 miles. They usually wear through the electrical commutator on the pump motor, and then you get a "dead sector" of the motor, which presents itself as a dull grumbling or "buzzing a little louder than normal". But it's hard to tell. The pump will never fail while you're driving because inertia carries the motor through the dead sector, but you may be unable to start the car again after stopping it, if the motor stops on the dead sector. It's a game of roulette every time you shut the car off.
Sometimes failed pumps can be gotten to run again by thumping on the bottom of the tank with your fist while the fuel pump relay has been jumpered to give continuous current to the pump (basically you are moving the motor past the dead sector by hitting it). But I recommend preventatively changing the thing. The pump is cheap, and the procedure is easy. Remember to change the O-ring on top of the tank as well! The old one will be hardened with age. And be careful with those fuel line check valves. They are really easy to break.
