Sorry, I misread your original post. The original bore was threaded 8 X 1.25 mm but now it's stripped out. (Somehow I thought you just wanted to clean up existing threads?) The next standard size bolt in metric is gonna be 10 mm diameter and the next size up in SAE is 3/8" which is a little smaller than 10 mm (0.375" vs 0.394"). You can try just boring and tapping for a 3/8" X 16 bolt (I would not recommend 3/8" X 24 here). You'll use a 5/16" drill bit to bore out the hole. Be cautious and go slow with the tap, Use some light lube like WD40 or mineral spirits and clear the chips frequently. Measure the hole depth so you know when it's nearing the bottom and STOP, you don't want to break it off in there (like I did). Of course you'll have to bore the hole in the thermostat cover to 3/8" to accommodate the bigger bolt. Without going to look I can't say whether there is enough room to do that. Might matter which hole is being bored. You can also install an 8 X 1.25 heli-coil and in that process you'll bore the hole to about 5/16" but when you are done you'll be able to install an 8 mm bolt as original and won't have to enlarge the hole in the cover. The heli-coil kit comes with the special tap and insertion tool. It's a small investment (about $25 as I recall at an auto parts store) but like I said, 8 X 1.25 mm is the most common bolt size in the C900 so you may get to use it again. Heli-coils work pretty well in this application. Good luck.
