Found out an interesting thing about OEM brake switches Posted by RS [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
for '89 and up.
The plunger can be adjusted by pulling it out.
How did I find this out? Replaced the brake booster on my '89 SPG. The old one was hissing pretty loudly when the brake pedal was pressed. Unfortunately, the word is that the seal on the '89s can't be replaced. Lucked out because I found the booster I took off my dear departed '88 SPG some 13 years ago. Sometimes it's good to be a packrat.
I won't go through the whole procedure. Other than getting to the nuts that secure the booster, it's pretty straightforward. After I got the replacement booster in and all of be various brake parts bolted back together, I noticed something ... the brake lights were on, the switch didn't click when the pedal was released, and the switch was a bit hot. Turns out that the clevis on the one from the '88 is about 1/8" shorter than the '89. They're both the same part number.
Spent a couple of hours trying to adjust the switch, put in a shim to adjust the switch, bend the bracket, and eventually take the bracket out to figure out what was going on. With all of the wiring under there, it's not easy to navigate down there. In that last process, I broke one of the ears off the switch.
Crap, it's Saturday evening and NOBODY is going to have one of these anywhere in ATL.
I did a search and found a site with an article titled "Brake Light switch fix-all C900's". Heck, these official SAAB switches are adjustable.
Pulled out the plunger to see what would happen, put the broken switch back in, and it works just like it's supposed to.
I'm going to order a new switch from one of the sponsors with the knowledge that this switch isn't going to last all that long. My experience is that the aftermarket switches aren't nearly as good as the OEM switches.
