You'll need to get into the shift console to effect the repair. What I've done is remove the pass seat. Take out the 3 shift console mounting screws. Tilt the console 90 degrees and unscrew the 3 screws on the bottom that hold the cover plates. Then I've taken the switch out of the housing with the wires connected. You can then operate the ignition switch with a large screwdriver. I've driven my car this way while I look for parts. One caution. As stated above the drive gear is what usually breaks however I have had at least one car where the ignition lock cylinder shattered and the drive gear was OK. I'd recommended disassembly to verify what's broken before you purchase the gear set.
