Re: Ignition Lock Cylinder Posted by Roger D [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Ignition Lock Cylinder, LIFETIMEOFSAABS ![]() |
A new lock cylinder can be rekeyed. The inner and outer cylinder pieces come apart by pulling the spring pin out. The same pin that is depressed to remove the cylinder from the console. The key issue is getting the correct sliding brass plates-tumblers? (there is a locksmith name for the plates but it's not coming to me right now) to match the key. There is a specific repair kit for Saabs that a locksmith can get but it seems most don't have. No doubt due to low demand. The kit has the brass plates, springs and the plastic 'C' clips for the hatch and door cylinders. Another option is to use the new cylinder outer shell but use the inner guts with the original plates combined with outer shell. It's my understanding that the brass plates tend to groove the outer shell thus creating slop in the action. This is relayed to me by a family member who bought the locksmith kit and has refurbished some of their own cylinders.
