Running the car down the road wouldn't overheat the motor with the cooling fans not running. Only when the car comes to a stop or driving in stop and go traffic under 45mph. I get the image reading your post you were driving on rual back roads or on the hwy. Having air lock in the radiator is next to impossable I've done everything possible to the cooling system as to, flying down the hwy having a rad. Hose let loose blowing out all my coolant pulling into a rest area doing a temp. Fix filling it up with water to get it home, to flushing, changing T stat, you name it i done it. Never once did I bleed the system and it was fine. Your problem in the cooling system is not air lock. If keeping the same motor might want to get a new water pump and t stat also.
Getting a new power plant is like flipping a coin. Like my parts car motor, never heard it run dropped it in and low and behold, it needs valve cover gasket, water pump, turbo oil return O ring, and so on. But it's very minor items compared to rebuilding my 320,000 mile motor which needs new rings. If you go for a new power plant replace as much as u can before dropping it in, new water pump, crankshaft o ring, oil pump o rings, as for the oil pump,. I'd leave the old one in never heard of an oil pump going. But still if you want to take the time to rebuild a motor I'll send you my 320,000 mile motor and you can rebuild that one, only thing it needs is piston rings, lest this way you know what's wrong with it. Compared to digging into yours and playing seek and destroy for everything that was wrecked and still might miss something.
