Extra virgin olive oil OR Jim Beam. No but seriously folks......Here's the thing....There's no way to "definitively" tell (no "last word"). I've seen units that ran in all the different types of oil and had every possible problem or lack of any problem at all (god I'm old). I've seen units that had been filled with only the most expensive, high tech special manual transmission lubricant and had horrible failures and I've seen units that had only run in 10w30 and were beautiful inside. I saw a man punch a nun in the face. (Wait...forget I said that.) This applies to both five speeds and T37 automatic differentials. IN MY OPINION the choice of oil is not as important to longevity as is the care with which the unit is shifted, the condition of the clutch and keeping the unit filled to the mark at all times. In my personal cars I use nothing but Castrol 10w30 and I never have serious problems (and I drive like a maniac) and that applies to most of the folks I've rebuilt transmissions for as well. Bad clutch hydraulics and low lubricant levels contribute to more C900 five speed failures than oil choice (again, my opinion). One might argue that some lubricants are better for the bronze elements than others but if your clutch hydraulics are weak you are stressing and damaging those elements every time you shift. When you run low on lubricant you are hurting virtually every moving part in the unit whenever driving. I haven't see any evidence, which was verifiable by me, that a lubricant choice (within the range of typical choices) prolongs the life of the bearings or gears. With that in mind I'd say, use good 10w30, keep it full, maintain your clutch hydraulics and use the clutch properly and expect that the pinion bearings will eventually wear out and require replacement. If the gears or shafts get damaged it's not because the wrong lubricant was employed. So, in summary, use quality 10w30 for both applications. I could have answered your question with five words but where's the fun? Huh? Where's the fun?
