The seal is a tight fit in it's bore and very difficult to install squarely even with the unit on the bench. Easy to remove the old one with a punch (or screwdriver) and hammer as RTSDan said. Ideally you need a steel sleeve or collar that is a nice slip fit on the shift shaft and has a broad enough face to contact the entire rim of the new seal so it drives in right square. The transmission blocks you from getting an easy swing on the sleeve (tool) with a hammer so the tool has an arm projecting off of one side for striking. You can make a tool from a 3/8" iron pipe fitting by running a 5/8" drill or reamer through it and filing the end square and smooth. Then weld an arm on the side or slide a deep socket or length of pipe over the shaft (on top of the tool) and hit that. As long as the tool slides on the shaft squarely the seal will drive in properly. If the tool is loose enough to tip on the shaft, even a little bit, the seal will probably get wrecked. Before you install the new seal file any burrs from the shaft and polish it up with some fine sandpaper or the new seal will be damaged when it's installed.
