The point of a shock absorber is to control the spring. It has a secondary effect of eliminating excessive suspension activity, but really it's there to prevent the spring from springing uncomfortably. On a 900 with stock springs, you will probably want to keep the shock on the lowest two settings. Going higher will give the appearance of s stiffer ride, but once you're actually into the spring the shock probably won't be doing you any good. It's been a LONG time since I've had a 900 with stock springs, but I recall they are fairly soft. A soft spring with a stiff damper doesn't do anyone any good.
