After the 3-point turn that you mentioned previously, you probably got some air in the pump, maybe sucked in through a marginal shaft seal. The whining or groaning you heard is what we in the mechanical fluid-moving biz call cavitation.
Sounds like the air escaped to a high point in the system or went into solution.
From a general maintenance standpoint, if the fluid is black, it wouldn't be a bad idea to flush it. If not, you're probably OK.
