one I've taken off the winter salt diet. The other pretty much only sees that.

Oil spray! I can't say this enough. You can see photos of both cars in my gallery, but in a nutshell, if you oil spray they only rust where the oil doesn't go. So the more you do, the better! We spray inside every cavity of the car every year. I have found substantial floor rust in the winter beater under the carpets where they were probably soaking wet all the time (was wet when I pulled them), and of course we never oil spray under the carpets... but that is after 24 years of salt slush and snow.

The other thing I would make sure of is that all gaskets and seals (windows etc) are intact. These cars make excellent winter vehicles. Exhausts *will* rust out fast. However, you can put a turbo cat back exhaust on it when what is there fails for about $150 from eeuro. It mates right up with the 2.1L cat and is only a hair louder and has several fewer joints (that resonator and its joints fail first)... that's pretty cheap, so I don't worry about exhausts anymore.

here's a photo from our 1993. it's grimy but you won't see this area as intact if you don't oil spray. original paint throughout, never been worked on. They do make excellent winter cars!
