Bill,
the greater resistance value affects the RPM threshold which you should make to energize the alternator. Bentley is 50/50 incorrect on page #321-1: it does not affect battery charge process at all after the alternator is energized since there's the same +12V potential on D+ terminal and thus there's no current flowing thru the bulb (*). Although if you don't have a steady idle, then your alternator can quite from energizing condition should your RPMs drop too low - in this case you will see the light being on until the alternator goes energized again.

To make the current flow there must be different potentials on each side of the conductor. If you run a bulb on two wires from the same battery terminal, then it will not make it because there will be the same potential (i.e. no potential drop) on both bulb's terminals.
