Keep prying it will pop out, no need to depress the clutch spring. You can place a socket over the end of the shaft and insert a bolt with a stout washer on it. Screw in the bolt and it will pull the shaft out. There is a wire snap ring in the upper chainwheel that grabs a groove in the shaft and it can be really stubborn. You can separate the engine and transmission without compressing or removing the clutch. I don't recall whether you need to remove the slave screws and/or the clutch cover bolts, I think that you can just lift the engine away and remove the clutch afterwards. Of course the clutch shaft must be removed first. The you can compress the clutch and insert the ring tool for later installation with a drill press or by other means.
