You're tracking it down pretty well. Since you have spark, I'd come to the same conclusion: ECU
LH 2.2 ECUs are pretty hardy compared to early LH 2.4 ECUs, but they do fail on occasion.
Do you have easy access to a spare 2.2 that you can swap in?
Here's a link to the Townsend 2.2 no-start troubleshooting page. You've done a lot of the diagnostics already.
One important thing is that, if the ECU really died, you'll want to replace the system relay and fuel pump relay for the reasons at the bottom of Townsend's troubleshooting page.
