fuel pump failure

Wife’s 92 900 135000 Km convertible refused to run. Starts right away, runs for less than one second. Confirmed fuel pump failure after basic checks. Ordered new pump from eeuro. Curious as to what caused pump to fail. Found lots of debris in reservoir. How did this all this stuff get past the filter? Filter failure?
Anyway, pump will run if I move armature “out of its dead spot” by hand (with small probe). It may or not restart, depending on where commutator stops after power is removed.
So, I wanted to know the reason for the failure. Put the cylindrical pump in the lathe, removed crimped-on ends. Pulled everything apart. Found brushes in excellent condition (brushes are very long, and are parallel to the axis of the cylindrical pump.
Failure point? Brushes had worn commutator face (radial in this motor design) down to plastic in about 1/3 of commutator area. Remaining commutator copper was heavily grooved.
Conclusion? Abrasives have come through the fuel filter. Why, I don’t know. I’ll replace filter on both our daily Saabs.
I’ll replace my wife’s filter first. Then, take apart old one in lathe. If anything interesting shows up, I’ll post it.
