Wait wait wait...I've SEEN 8v engines with the tranny still bolted on and head/timing cover removed...IN THE CAR! It's possible! I don't know what they changed to go to 16v, but I think it's still doable. You need to remove that stud from the transmission. Use vise grips to turn it. Then the timing cover comes off directly rearwards. The problem is getting it to seal when you put it back on. Because you'll have to slide it on forwards, directly parallel to the mating surface on the transmission, it can be very difficult to get this interface to seal. But some have succeeded even in this. Same problem if you remove the timing cover from the engine while it's still got the head on. Very hard to seal the interface between cover and head in that case.
