The,
That tick, tick ,tick, is much more likely to be coming from a defective clutch cover, throw out bearing or some input element or synchromesh problem in the transmission. The reverse idler would have to be bumping the reverse mainshaft gear while in neutral to make a noise and that just doesn't seem to happen with these units. Of course there's a first time for everything. The "reverse fix" (I call it the "Myles reverse fix" because my brother showed it to me in about 1987) has the effect of creating deeper engagement of the reverse idler to prevent it from suddenly disengaging (popping out of reverse) so if your gears were bumping together it would be exactly the wrong thing to do. I would put money on a worn out synchromesh guide ring, probably at fourth gear, and you may find pieces of it on the magnet. How many miles are on the unit and has it ever been rebuilt? You could take the side cover off, remove the actuator arm, lock the reverse idler back and see if that stops the noise.
