no choice but to use timing light IMO....... Posted by DET17 [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Vac. advance diaphragm goes at 12 o'clock, Tim, Thu, 10 Oct 2013 04:56:17 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Indeed, you must. Sears was selling their CRAFTSMAN timing light for around $50 a few years ago....less and less demand for them; otherwise just borrow one. Follow the instructions in Bentley on WHERE to mark & time. Have a helper bump the engine around with starter until the timing marks are exposed near 12 o'clock on the flywheel cover (much easier to see on a NA car without the turbo plumbing in the way). Chalk mark the slash with your desired timing (maybe 14* for NA, from memory? Bentley will advise you). With the car idling & vacuum advance plugged, turn distributor until your 14* target lines up with the black groove in the plastic (hopefully it hasn't fallen off yet, plastic disintegration).
On the original NA setup, the EZK ignition took care of your timing based on the CPS input (I tested this on my old 90 NA....you could turn the distributor almost 90* and the timing at flywheel would never change!). However, now with you using the Turbo distributor, when you move it you are changing the input timing from the HALL sensor for each ignition cycle, so YOU set the timing.
I see no way to get it properly timed without a light.
