You state that there is more room on the old "robust" as Sandy called it, to allow for the horn contact rings. However, the watch spring package looks pretty thick from front to back. Did you try to graft the 360* contact ring setup into the late column?
I've just rebuilt my 91 column....new top bearing, new rubber bushing to get rid of the wobbling that is endemic to the design. If possible, I'd like to save the work I did to the column. If a spacer is need, that should be easy to fab when replacing the clockspring with the contact rings.
