First thing is to do some very simple checks with a volt meter.
Make sure battery terminals are clean and tight and the same for the connections at the alternator and from the alternator to ground.

With the car not running the battery should show 12 - 12.5 volts at the battery terminals if fully charged. If it shows less then the battery is under charged or has a shorted cell. If you see real low voltage, like 8 volts then the battery is most likely bad. If your battery is 5 years old or older you should replace it anyway.

With the engine running you should see at least 13.6 volts, and if the battery is low on charge you should see 14.6 volts. So anywhere between those two voltages means the alternator is charging the battery. If you see over 15 volts then the battery is being overcharged and if under 13.5 then under charged. This means either the voltage regulator is bad or the alternator itself is bad.
