I'm a little late. I have a 1993 2.1L... personally I'd go for a turbo all else equal but choice is more limited these days... anyway, yes, hg was a major issue on these cars - check Townsend's site, but I would ask many questions about the hg job - when was the original hg replaced, what did they do about the pitting, is there still green $h!t still in the cooling system or have they switched over to merc (or equivalent) coolant. How the motor sounds will tell you something also. The original hg from the factory on these was bad, so it should have been done early on - like in the first 50k as a warranty/maintenance item. If not, when it was done, the block was probably pitted and things were probably generally a mess and it depends how good the mechanic was!
If the body is great and it has a good manual transmission, then you should be fine with the 2.1L. It definitely has more go than the 2.0L na. I go with Townsends' advice to the letter on these cars and it works well. good luck!
