It occurs to me I had a similar problem once on a convertible, but IIRC only one side of the lights would go out. Turned out to be the harnesses had been connected to the light cluster on the driver's side (IIRC) had been incorrectly connected. On the notchback cars, the chassis connects to one light, and then a subharness daisy chains to the other. They are not clearly marked and can be plugged in incorrectly.
Related, since you've got an '85, you might check that wiring - especially on that daisy chain harness - to be sure it hasn't fallen apart. Though, TBH, if it had you've probably see other goofy electrical symptoms.
