You should be able to run a car for a reasonable amount of time on just the battery, and the condition of the alternator wouldn't change the behavior of electrical stuff, especially when the engine isn't running. But your experience here definitely points the finger at that ground point, because I'm fairly certain that's where the BATT light is grounded, and if it doesn't have a proper ground (the bulb itself isn't working), the alternator will likely not charge and you'll kill the battery in 15 or 20 minutes.
So, does the BATT light come on when you turn the key to ON and then go out once the car is running?
