Roger, here is how my front springs came out... Posted by DET17 [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Removing a Front Spring With a Cut-off Grinder, Roger D ![]() |
same year, Turbo springs (gold/copper paint visible). I rented the Advance AP spring compressor kit. You can only capture 4 coils of the SAABie front turbo springs, before either the compressors screws contact the inside fender well, or you can't drive the hex head of the ACME screw due to suspension interference. You will notice the steel spacers over the ACME threads of the compressors. I used 300# pipe couplings, maybe 1/2" or else 3/4" which fit nicely. There is NOT enough travel possible to use this type compressor in this application WITHOUT using these spacers. Believe me, I tried, and it's just not possible. This method works, and is safe, without risk of killing yourself by cutting springs. Just way too much energy in play here to take that shortcut....save it for the 19 year olds who still have 9 lives left! Good luck, and be careful!
Got the pic fixed...had to read the FAQ again! Another fine point, note there are 3 hardened washers which drop onto the hex drive end of the ACME screws on the compressors. These are needed to contain those pipe coupling spacers, as the small hex drive end has a small built in washer flat, which works AOK on the spring containing jaws, but is TOO small for the pipe couplings. I also applied liberal oil lube to the ACME screws, and then drove them with an air ratchet to save your arm/elbows, etc. from the many revolutions required.
Pipe couplings and hardened washers available at LOWES or other Home Improvement stores.
Be safe with those springs....they kill.
