the car won't crank at all if the starter is kaput. I would definitely inspect the battery and alternator wires first, especially if they are original to the car. By now, you may even find sections of insulation crumbling and that is bad news! Our 1993's insulation was not too bad, but the cable was still too high resistance, such that the battery was not charging as well as it should have. Our 1989 had low enough resistance to not affect starting/charging, but cable crumbling everywhere was a fire hazard, so both cars got new cables.
