Had that problem - didn't realize it until my indy spotted it and added the ground. A couple years later, a different connection in the same connector corroded and did the same thing. The problem is this (as I remember it):
Multiple signals must pass from pins on 1 side of a female edge connector, through the male edge to the other side, and back to the corresponding pin on the other side of the female connector which then has a wire go to the other tail light assy. Ground is only 1 of them, but it probably sees the most current. Anyway, any corrosion becomes cyclic, eventually overheating, melting, losing contact, etc. I think the only permanent solution is to rewire the whole mess, perhaps ditching the connectors altogether... however, last time, I just cleaned the contacts and it has been good for about 3 years now...
ee 101: mechanical parts are the first things to fail (connectors, connections, switches, pots, etc)... use as few as possible in your design!
