Fellas,
first of all, thanks for staying with me.

Re temperature: it wasn't that cold as one might think when thinking of Mordor. The whole winter of '13-14 isn't that mordor-like, we only had four or five weeks of cold and snow and the rest of it happened to be like slightly above of 32F. On that trip it was bouncing around 32F - going down to, say, 25F on the way there and back up to 35F on the way back. I think it's what you used to have there over the seas.

When I gave up and pulled off the freeway to some gas station and inspected the wheel bolts and hub nuts, I also went under the hood - and saw nothing. Well, I mean I saw (or heard/smelled) nothing wrong. Although I couldn't make it underneath the car to fully examine the shafts, CV joints and tripods. I also twitched the exhaust and it didn't feel like it lost any of the rubber hangers - it felt as solid as it should be.

I don't think it was the ice on the back side of the rims. First, on the outside the rims looked like they washed and cleaned - and they indeed were washed since for the last ~50 miles to that point it was more raining rather then snowing. And they looked pretty clean thru the spokes. Secondly, I really did try heating up the brakes - and rims (I run alloys all year around) - I heavily floored both brakes and gas pedals for a good half a mile until I felt I was about to boil and loose my brakes and that changed nothing. Or almost nothing.

I think the thing that most bothers me here (putting aside the whole thing that happened) is that it was giving heavier shake on the slight acceleration. On the hard acceleration it was making less shake (relatively; in the absolute terms it was still frightening huge and heavy). If I was coasting in the neutral or having the clutch disengaged then there was no shuttering at all whatever speed I was making. So it's got to be something about some backlash or free-play. But what and where?

Zig
