Sunroof motor trouble shooting..... Posted by DET17 [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Getting my 90 900T debugged for sale, and need to get my sunroof motor sorted.
Confirmed the switch function; pulled connector and power is sourced on the red/green, so switch & supply is AOK.
"As found", the 3 little Phillips head screws that hold the motor, worm gear mechanics and the pair of male dogs that drive the rubber plate, screws were "loose" or partially backed out. Inspection of the rubber driven plate shows both both of the female holes that the dogs engage are elongated, one side torn thru. My mind says "mechanical overload" could cause the excessive force required to actuate the sunroof.
10 years ago, I removed the sunroof when a headliner replacement was done...everything cleaned and lubed, might have even replaced some of the plastic items back when they were available. It operated well for years (I've owned this one 11 years now).
Last night I greased the gear/worm, and operated the motor from the drivers seat. In one direction, I hear smooth motor running, no alien noise. In the opposite direction, about every gear rev I hear a audible CLICK coming back. This testing was done DISCONNECTED from the roof cable system, the rubber disc and driven gearing. So something for sure is amiss in the motor and gearhead assembly!
For grins, reassembled all (Phillips fully installed), bumped the open switch, and the sunroof moved open about 100mm, then stopped. Continuous motor actuation results in no movement, neither closing the sunroof nor opening any further.
SIDEBAR - years ago, I bought one of the Jaguar sunroof motor drive gears....they had gone obsolete from SAAB, and it was known the Jag part was identical. I've used one in the past (now Son's car, still AOK). I've got another, hidden in plan sight somewhere....will use for this one if required (and IF I can find it).
I'm guessing one explanation is said drive gear has the plastic teeth blown off at a point, and that is the CLUNK that I heard. However, I didn't have time last night to disassemble further. Another option is the sunroof drivetrain (cabes, etc) have a mechanical bind, and the motor operates until it hits that HIGH resistance, then possibly just pushes apart the assembly Phillips screws. This would explain the rubber disc tear out at the female drive points.
I'll be filleting this all out this weekend....but I know folks here have BTDT on the sunroof and every drive failure know to mankind.
Thanks in advance.
