Describe the sound please. If the lifters are without oil they will clatter and the noise will seem to come from the valve cover. If the lifters are running dry and clattering that would support the notion that the oil light is on for a good reason (low pressure). You can prime the pump by removing the oil filter adapter and squirting oil in the rear-most hole in the block, it goes straight to the pump. I've known these engines to self prime after re-assembly (but it's not smart to rely on that). If the oil pressure relief valve gets jammed that can prevent building oil pressure so you may have to deal with that. You should avoid running the engine as much as possible until you solve the problem.
