By all means check the level of fluid in the final drive. If it is low or empty the whine could be the final drive and you don't want that to crap out. It uses gear oil like 80-90 or 10w30 engine oil, either is acceptable. There is a drain plug on the bottom and a plug on the passenger side for filling. It should be filled up to the plug hole (car level). I used to get those units all the time from people that had ignored a final drive oil leak until the final drive was empty causing it to overheat and be destroyed. Some people know to check the ATF level but ignore the final drive. It usually loses oil from a worn axle seal on the passenger side or the rear cover. Driver's side axle seal can leak too but the passenger side one gets hot and wears out sooner.
