I've had several cars with bad sensors. They ran normally. After I replaced the sensor the cars had noticeably more power/better mileage. To test my Saab I go to the two sensor plugs next to the positive junction block. The plug with the 2 white wires isn't involved with the test. I go to the single black wire plug. Peel back the rubber boot to expose the blade connector. With the engine idling I put the pos. meter lead on the blade connector and ground the other meter lead. You should then see the voltage swing rapidly up and down like Tweetiedancer described.
