High temp, dirty coolant Posted by ChrisMiami [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I'm on the highway and I look down at the speedo and notice the temp is pegged as far above "H" as it can go. Yikes! Pop the hood release to get some more air in there. Needle didn't even wiggle.
Slow down and get off the road, coast into a parking lot and shut down, keeping the fans running (relay busted, have to keep the key in On position).
When things get cool enough, pull the reservoir cap and look inside - looks like a cesspool - black water covered with flakes of something floating around. Pour coolant into it (goes from below Min to Max). Leave it circulating for another 15 min. Fans still on.
Crank the engine on and off a couple times so water pump pulls. Decide to hobble back to where I'd left my truck. A block later, notice the temp is back to normal - middle of the dial. Stays there the whole way back.
Based on what I saw (rusty radiator edges, sludgey muck in coolant reservoir and temp pegged past High), I'm thinking that the minimum reaction is going to be a new radiator & hoses, a new water pump and to somehow flush the block's water jacket. A new head gasket and maybe need to deck it too based on heat warping?
Am I over-reacting?
