These are great cars and if you are interested in doing your own work, they are not too expensive to own and a lot of fun. I would start by getting yourself a Bentley manual. It outlines tools and basic maintenance. Pretty much everything is metric, so don't waste $$ on imperial tools.
Aside from that, the search tool is really useful here. For your car, main issues to look into are cooling system (search "Townsend" and follow his advice)... 2.1L's can have issues related to this so you want to set things straight if that hasn't already been done. You didn't mention if you have a stick or automatic - different considerations for those, again, search. Make sure the charging system wiring is in good condition (battery cables as well as alternator cables). There's lots of other common problems that you can search up if you have them (sagging headliner, bad tail light grounds, etc)... This place is a valuable resource!
