I miss my Saab! Sold my '91 Turbo convertible 7 years ago, and have been pining for another ever since. I loved every minute of driving that car for 70K miles and it was pretty darned reliable save for a horrifically expensive tranny rebuild.

A year ago I tried to fill that void with a nicely kept '85 Turbo 3 door. I picked it up from the original owner, an engineer who had babied the car in every way except she didn't have a garage to put it in, and left it baking in the california sun for 25 years. Maybe that explains the problems i had...In short order a front caliper seized, a fuel hose started leaking, master cylinder went out, lots of little expensive things...plus the car was very funky-musty smelling even an ozone treatment didn't help...and after I fixed them I realized that I just didn't have the same passion for it as my 'vert and that I didn't want to keep investing money and grief in it. I was left with the impression that the older 900s just weren't as solid. I wondered if these cars were just getting too old, and that I had gotten lucky with the '91 and maybe I should just give up my obsession.

I saw somebody here post that Saab had worked out a lot of the kinks in later years and that '91-'93 are the best bets in lots of ways. In my limited experience that was certainly true. Feeling nervous about an '87.

Well my continual internet trawling for Saabs has produced the chance to go look at the one in the subject line that is a mere 5 hours away, and that I can presently afford.

Cons: It needs a new top, badly. Also, it is not passing the emissions test, although the dude says that it has a good catalytic converter and he thinks it may just be a vacuum thing. Interior is a bit of a mess.

Pros: Only 110K miles. New Clutch and rebuilt transmission within the last 10K. I swore to myself I'd never buy another unless the tranny had already been redone, and some very nice ones out there that sell for much more don't have that. No rust. Straight body.

So, assuming that there is nothing else major wrong with this '87, should I take on the project or save up my pennies to buy a nice and clean, later model C900 when I can? The good ones aren't getting any cheaper...

Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated.
