Sunroof Operation Posted by Paul K [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I bought my first C900 ('93 900T) and I'm starting to attack the issues I inherited. One of the issues is the issue of the sunroof not being able to close. The PO said that one day the sunroof just failed to close, he mentioned he was able to close it by hooking a drill up to the motor and spinning it, he then disconnected the motor so as to not open the sunroof by mistake.
The first thing I did was reconnect the motor and verify it still opened the sunroof, which it did but I was not able to close it. Not realizing that there is a small handle to crank this motor, I as well used a drill but I wasnt sure which way to spin, one way produced some clicking noises and the other way closed the sunroof. Afterwards I checked the voltage to the motor and I was not getting any voltage when trying to close the sunroof, I dissembled the window switch and cleaned it and also found that I had to slightly bend one of the metal rockers in order to get contact. At this point the sunroof worked fine when opening but would jerk every few inches before it closed (I realize that this may have been my own doing because of winding the motor with the drill).
Unsatisfied with the sunroof closing like this I took apart the motor and found that the plastic gear has worn teeth for about 3/4 of an inch. After putting back the parts I found that I'm only able to move the sunroof about 2 inches in each direction, this is whether I manually crank the motor or through the switch. When cranking by hand I can crank about 40 turns but then I start feeling resistance and then gear clicks and I'm not able to proceed further, upon disassembling the motor it is indeed on the spot where the teeth are grind-ed down, if I move past this point I'm able to turn another 40 turns and the same clicking happens.
I realize I need the aluminum (Mile High Auto) or Jaguar gear at the very minimum, but could I have damaged something else requiring more parts? Perhaps it makes more sense to get a whole motor and gear assembly from ebay? I disconnected the motor and gears from the sunroof cables and the roof can easily be moved by hand, but not easily if tug on the cables from the hatch. When I put the metal gear and rubber biscuit portion back on without the motor the sunroof is harder to move but still freely moves back and forth.
This has led me to a few questions:
1. When the sunroof is operated through the switch, what is stopping the motor when the sunroof is fully open or fully closed? Can holding the button longer than needed strip the new gear I plan to install?
2. When hand cranking, what's stopping you from possibly stripping the gears? Does the rubber biscuit have anything to do with this?
3. How do we know if the rubber biscuit needs to be replaced?
4. Does anyone have these extra gears? Or a good working sunroof motor assembly?
5. Does anyone know where to source the plastic wedges in the sunroof rails?
Sorry for the long description and thanks for reading!
