Re: Changing gearbox oil in later model c900 Posted by RS [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Changing gearbox oil in later model c900, Saabina ![]() |
Having had a C900 with one of the later transmissions transplanted into it, I'd pop the rear cover. The caveat is that you'll want to use the same kind of oil (engine oil or gear oil) that's in the gearbox.
Adding a drain plug would be expensive and, without the proper equipment for drilling, tapping, and machining the sealing surface could lead to a real mess and a lot of aluminum shavings in the gearbox.
It's a royal PITA but popping the rear cover gives you a chance to clean out the debris screen and use a shop rag to clean out the gritty crud that settles in the bottom of the ring gear chamber.
I usually change it every other engine oil change. The first time I changed the transmission oil in my '89, the stuff that came out looked like the Testors gold model paint that I used to buy as a kid, with all of those swirls of finely-ground synchro brass.
Even now, some 14 years after that first transmission oil change, the transmission coughs out a noticeable bit of metal swarf in the waste oil.
