It's a bit time-consuming but not all that difficult to pull the carpets. I had to do that when repairing a rust hole in the floor a couple of weeks ago.
Because the car was still needed to go to work and back, the drivers seat was re-installed. The car was driven for a week without the rest of the interior goodies. Not terribly civilized but it's better than getting a rental or borrowing the wife's Brand T.
That gives you lots of time to clean, disinfect, and deodorize the carpets and pads.
Just make sure that you put all of the fasteners in labeled plastic bags and take *lots* of pictures to jog the memory when re-installing.
If you pull the ventilation ducts to the rear seat footwells while you're in there (not a bad idea because it makes it easier to fully remove the front carpet padding without ripping it), you can also check the shift shaft boot's condition.
