That sounds a lot like the car was driven until the pinion bearings fell apart and seized up the unit. The other top probability was that it was low on transmission oil and the unit overheated and has seized up. The reason that the wheels will turn when raised (only in opposite directions to each other I'll bet) is because these transaxles have an open differential and the small bevel gears are NOT seized up but will only transmit torque from one front wheel to the other, not to the pinion gear (which is seized). Often when either of those two things happen the ring and pinion gears are destroyed and they are the heart of the transaxle. Has the transaxle ever been rebuilt (pinion bearing replacement)? You could pull the drain plug and see what kind of metal is stuck to it's magnet and you could also remove the rear cover and inspect the differential (ring and pinion) gears. If you are real, real lucky the gears are OK and just "jammed" as a result of the bearings failing and the unit can be rebuilt. Given that, it would be wise to not try to force those gears to turn (teeth will break off) prior to removing the transaxle for rebuilding. So don't force the car to roll, move it with the front wheels raised.
