bad pilot bearing.
When I got my '89 it was hard to get into first. I developed a technique of gently easing it into 1st when stopping. Eventually, the pilot bearing started doing a banshee act with the clutch depressed. Got the parts and did my first clutch job.
No problems shifting into first after that. 14 years later, still no problem with shifting due to the pilot bearing.
(The previous owner was probably told that he needed a transmission rebuild and decided to offload the car instead. Happy day for me. He got my response 20 minutes after he put it up on one of the national auto sales sites.)
