limited tire choices Posted by Snowmobile [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Best tire size for 1990 900TC with stock 15" turbo rims, turbocon86, Tue, 7 Oct 2014 06:38:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I don't mean this as a thread hijack, but have others also noticed diminishing choice in the c900 friendly tire sizes? Most new cars are going with bigger wheels and wider tires, even econoboxes, so the manufacturers seem to think the only ones worth making for small wheels are lower performance all seasons.
I suppose I am exaggerating, and I am probably overly picky (eg I like directional tires)... but on Tire Rack, the search gives me mostly standard all season and grand touring all season, most of which are not that interesting to me.
185/65R15: 0 summer, 37 all season, only 2 are high performance.
195/60R15: 0 summer, 45 all season, 6 are higher performance.
205/55R15: 1 high performance summer, 2 high performance all season.
205/60R15: 0 summer (but 1 track), 28 all season, 4 higher performance.
205/60 is closer to 185/65 and 205/55 is closer to 195/60. Any of these tires should be relatively fine on a c900, though to me 205 is probably a little wide.
Yoko AVID ENVigor and General Altimax HP are the most interesting to me in the normal 15" sizes, with a couple higher performance Goodyears maybe a possibility in 195/205. Yokohama S.drives in 205/55 look interesting if you value handling over comfort. If you like non-directionals, there are more choices. In some sense this makes sense as 15" is not really high performance anyway, and grand touring options are probably about right for most. I like keeping the relatively narrow tire profile on the c900, but I'd rather have a bit stiffer wheel, so I'm looking into getting a set of 16" rims for our nicer summer car and running 195/55R16. There are 20 summer tires and 31 all season options for that size, and many are V rated. So I think going up to 16" is worthwhile. Even so, I'm running Bridgestone RE970AS on our 9-5 and really like them. I would put them on the c900 also, but they don't offer it in the smaller size. RE960AS is for now still available in this 16" size, but it will likely disappear soon since it has been superseded by the 970.
I know many here are on to 205 series tires on the 16" rims, but there is always that debate of too small vs rub for 205, whereas 195 is an exact match and wide enough - I mainly just want a little more sidewall stiffness, not max takeoff traction. For me the c900 is more fun from a handling perspective than for stop light racing.
Anyway, to the op, I would look into General Altimax HP as this looks closest to my favourite set of 15" c900 tires so far (Nokian NRH2). If I was to get another set of 15" tires, that would be my choice, and they are dirt cheap right now! As a grand touring tire, they should be more comfortable than eg the 205/55 S.drive.
My biases are handling and grip (especially in the wet) over comfort, noise, and wear). I run dedicated snows for winter.
good luck!
