After tightening the belts, replacing the voltage regulator, replacing the ignition lock and "starter" relays, replacing the battery, and checking every *VISIBLE ground connection, my charging system continued to fail. I ran many a test with a test light and multi-meter only to reach the obvious conclusion that the beast was eating more electrical power while running than contributing.
Despairingly, I purchased a rebuilt alternator.
Step 1 in replacement process - Remove the oil filter to more easily access the alternator retaining bolts. *Guess what...this also exposes a hidden grounding wire connection (alternator casing to bracket, on my CE). It was loose.
As the connection to the bracket is in a tight spot, I attached a new 12ga ground wire to the alternator casing and tied it to an existing grounding post along the fender (left side) line.
The battery is charging very well now.
