Dash rheostat alternatives

My dash light rheostat only works in one position, the max light position. Upon inspection there is a break in the wire wound coil near the max light position.
Obviously I can just leave the rheostat in the max position and lighting in the car works, also the connections can be bridged and this would work as well. Does it make sense to dab some solder where the break is and hopefully bridge the open gap? Or are there new alternatives? Has anyone purchased a generic rheostat and put it in place of the Saab original? If so what amperage would it be? I've heard it may need to handle about 10 amps, does anyone know? Are there other solutions that members have tried?
Thanks in advance!
