Success! I managed to put that puppy all back together, and so far so good. The old clutch disk, showing no signs of oil or hydraulic fluid contamination, thickness was still 7.2mm, and with zero scoring or discoloration on either the flywheel or pressure plate, I opted to re-use them (along with throwout bearing) as-is.
Not having three hands, however, I figured out a new little trick that I haven't seen here or anywhere: I hung the clutch disk almost exactly in its final position with a piece of fine steel wire suspended from the rubber hose spaghetti still attached to the head. When I got the rest of everything squozed back in there, I easily pulled the wire all the way through and out from the top. Much more manageable that way.
So thanks everybody yet again, and have a great holiday. Oh and special thanks to CMyles who gave me the hairy eyeball, saying "just do it!". And so I did, but it reminded me of my old sergeant back in VN, who used to admonish us line infantry grunts with, "hey you can't live forever! Go on out there!".
Oh yeah, one thing did worry me, underneath that spring-bail secured gasketed cover where the clutch shaft comes out, with the cute propeller that splashes oil around... It was totally clean and dry: no oil no, nothing. Tranny oil level is apparently normal, and in every aspect gearbox was perfect. Should I be worried about an incipient lube failure?
More postings coming up soon on the latest other c900 saga: once I got the '88 on the road, I faced right up to the '91, which my wife nursed home last week stuck in second, not clear about what exactly was wrong. What was wrong was that the shifter was busted clean in two, outer tube as well as inner reverse-releasing rod. Just ordered a used one on eBay. Stay tuned for how that pans out.
