The belts that run the alternator also run the water pump. Two problems you will encounter are overheating and the battery draining. Which happens first depends on a few things most importantly how strong your battery is and how the outside temperature.
It is easy to keep track of the temp by looking at the temp gauge, if there is a safe place, you can pull over and wait for the engine to cool. The battery life is much more difficult to determine. I had the same issue and the battery easily made it a few miles in stop and go driving.
To maximize the distance you can travel you want to stay off the turbo, if it is a turbo car. That will minimize the overheating. Turn the cabin heater all the way to its hottest level You can also turn on the a/c as that will turn on one of your cooling fans. But the fan will add to the battery drain.
To minimize battery drain turn off all non critical power drains, including lights - if it is safe to do so, interior fan, and the radio.
I wouldn't go very far I was told 15 minutes on a strong battery. If you have a manual transmission and it is safe and legal you can try coasting down hill and coast to any stops you might make.
Good luck.
