Here is my take on the subject & I apologise for not reading all of the posts here on this topic. My last Saab, a '92 900S in Talladega Red was not clear coat base coat BUT it definitely was not simply a straight acrylic finish in the red colour. What I surmise is that Saab did a neat thing to get the luster up on these not-metallic colours. From a friend who has been in the paint business since the early 1970's (we painted cars in his mother's garage with a box fan in the window to ventilate the fumes but I digress)the final finish was a combination of clear coat & colour mixed together, up to 50% to get the deep luster. Just my 2 cents!
