I've installed them on the bench with a deep 5/8' socket. An older Craftsman socket that doesn't have the ledge half way down. If it's in the car there may not be enough of a gap to get a socket in the without moving the whole console shift rod assembly rear wards. I watched a mechanic remove one. He used some Blue Point vise grips and just grabbed that flared lip on the seal. Then tapped on the grips gently. Those Blue Point pliers did appear to have slightly slimmer jaw tips than the hardware store variety.
