How about the coupling and what kind is it -- the one with the dogbone or the circular older style?
If it's the dogbone, you can either replace the rubber portion that might be damaged, or put a couple of small hose clamps on each side to tighten it up. That's not a fix, but more of a bandaid.
I'll stretch a guess that it's as many as three things and could be 9 or 12. Depends on how you count the motor mounts for example....is that three or one condition?
So, once you find that the shift coupling is bad, then the next thing down the line comes up and shows itself. So, buckle up and get ready to chase the problem beast. The hope is that your gearbox is OK, and it's just the connections or rigging. And usually, I suspect the rigging too.
So, if the motor mounts are great, and the linkage in the cabin is OK, and the dogbone / round coupling is OK, then it's a matter of making sure the rigging is set per the manual, and there are few places that I've seen who do it right. Most of them just guess on adjustment and then try it out. I pin the transmission with the Saab tool, pin the gearshift in the shift housing and then tighten down the loose coupling.
AND, if you support the car on jackstands, it can make a difference on the adjustment. Having it on the platform lift so the wheels are on the lift like a wheel alignment rack is the best way, but not the only one of course.
