buy a known good gear and install it first Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Thu, 27 Aug 2015 06:26:19 In Reply to: Additional Info..., Paul K., Wed, 26 Aug 2015 13:47:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Before you start tearing in to the differential, buy a used speedo gear and swap it out. I had a wonky speedometer that first started to jerk, then eventually stopped working altogether. I replaced both the cable and speedo with no success, and even pulled the speedo gear to examine it (it appeared to be fine and showed no indication of a problem).
I bought both a new external speedo gear (easy to replace), and an internal gear (not at all easy to replace) in anticipation of having to tear down the differntial to solve the problem. After I swapped out the external speedo gear, everything worked fine.
I am guessing that the plastic on the inside of the gear where the cable meets the gear had eroded away so that the gear was no longer turning the cable. The cost of the external speedo gear was about $25 and took 20 minutes to replace. I don't even want to think about how long it would have taken to replace the inner gear.
I strongly suggest you give this a try before anything else. At $25, it mights save you an entire afternoon of greasy work and a lot of frustration.
