can you operate the power windows and does the ventilation fan work?
If that's the case, the master relay (some manuals call it the ignition switch relay) in position E in the fuse box has to be replaced.
It's not a bad idea to replace it anyway - it handles a *lot* of current and, because of that, the contacts tend to get pitted, conduct poorly, and cause a few issues similar to what you describe.
If you're adventurous, the relay can be disassembled, the contacts cleaned up using a Dremel with small stainless steel wire brush, and reassembled. It's not that hard a task, though.
Do not remove it when the car is running and do not turn the key to the run position with it removed. That'll trigger an SRS fault.
